Risk management / Finance / Investment - York vs Ivey vs Queens vs Rotman

Risk management / Finance / Investment - York vs Ivey vs Queens vs Rotman?
I have done MA Economics from South Asia. I have a senior management experience of 10-11 years. I would like to study more in the field of Risk Management or Finance. I decided to attend a graduate program from Canada because its worldwide recognised with excellent reputation and very cost effective. I short listed few courses and universities but need to know which are the best program suited for Investment Banking and can give me good long term growth: 1. Master in Financial Economics, University of Toronto 2. Master in Finance, York University 3. MBA in Finance, York University 4. MBA in Finance, University of Western Ontario 5. MBA in Finance, Queens University Your suggestions and opinion matters alot to take a decision.

Go with what youre interested in it will make your studies easier but i would reccomend if you dont get your masters in marketing to at least incorporate some marketing classes into your schedule. Just so you know what youre getting into and you can show employers that you are familiar with the material.

2
Marketing Research uses a lot of Statistics, so a Masters in Applied Stats would be very valuable.

3
Definitely Economics. Try to do a lot of recreational reading, that will help as well. Also, it might be useful to develop the "market research" instincts by constantly observing and comparing prices of various commodities, classes of goods, etc. Good Luck, your choice is an excellent one.

4
I'm in this field and behavioral statisitics is very important. Using mathematics, forward thinking companies can actually model behavioral trends in purchasing. Also, I find that my MBA is a really good match for this type of work as well. Hope this helps...

Well, India is such a 3rd worl shithole country. And, only elitist rich ppl are allowed to study abroad. DO you have balls? Are you brave? Become something extreme like a drug smuggler. Can you get around w/ your language in Pakistan and Afghanistan? This will help loads in heroin deliveries. Or, join the French foreign legion. Go on some cool missions and write a book about it. Or perhaps become an arms dealer. There is way too much emphasis on structured education. Read loads of books. Especially if its something you're interested in. Become a self taught master of it. The vast majority of self made millionaires are either high school or college drop outs. Oh, dont have kids... Look at your parents. No money+ making babies=poverty stricken children in this capitalistic world.

macro economics help me help ma

macro economics help me help ma?
Suppose there are only two firms in an economy: Cowhide, Inc. produces leather and sells it to Couches, Inc., which produces and sells leather furniture. With each $1,000 of leather that it buys from Cowhide, Inc., Couches, Inc. produces a couch and sells it for $2,000. Neither firm had any inventory at the beginning of 2006. During that year, Cowhide produced enough leather for 20 couches. Couches, Inc. bought 80% of that leather for $16,000 and promised to buy the remaining 20% for $4,000 in 2007. Couches, Inc. produced 16 couches during 2006 and sold each one during that year for $2,000. What was the economy's GDP for the year? $32,000 $36,000 $40,000 $52,000

if you have chemistry look for a job dealing with chemistry. not some lowly job at a train station, look into jobs at water treatment facility, zoo, botanical gardens, pharmacuticals plant, any sort of a chemical plant , jobs dealing with treatment of animals, use your college for something. economics well im not sure what you do with that, maybe a job deciding if various farms are making money and how they can save it by using the minium in chemicals to treat their plants and animals.

Would a Bachelor's degree and Master's degree make you overqualified?
Assume the candidate has little work experience, ie) worked at a call centre for half a year If this person has a BA in Economics and MA in Economics, what are the chances they will be hired for an entry-level position? Remember, they don't have any relevant work experience.

Having a Bachelors and Master's degree will be worth it in the end. However, with the current economy a lot of employers are taking work experience into greater consideration than before. I dont think having high ed degrees will ever work against you though. Once you are able to get an entry level position, degrees combined with work experience will put you WAY ahead of the pack.

MA in Econ or MBA

MA in Econ or MBA?
I need some help here. I have my BA in Economics. I am going to go back to school for my masters degree but am unsure of which to get. I was pretty much sold on an MBA with an emphasis on finance. As the time came closer to start the program, I got worried I was making a mistake. I cancelled classes. I think I might want an MA in Economics. Here's my issue: an MBA seems to be much more versatile. I won't get myself pigeon-holed into one career path that may not work out for me. I see unlimited possibilities with an MBA. Then there's the MA in Econ. My passion is economics. I love it and want to work for the federal govt or the Fed someday. I'm afraid it will be difficult to find a good job after completing that degree. After all, how many economists do you know? Please give me any insight you have as far as the reality of the MBA vs MA in Econ.

I have a BA in Finance, an MBA in Management, and a PhD in Organizational Behavior. You are absolutely correct in your supposition that the MBA is more flexible. I am not sure what school you are looking at but would it be possible to get the MBA with a concentration in Economics? Or even take Economics as all of your electives? On the other hand if you are truly passionate about Economics you may want to go that route. Have you looked for Economics jobs in the government sector? What are the minimum requirements as far as education and experience? It may be that any masters level degree will suffice or there could be requirements for specific degrees. Good luck with our education. The most important thing to do is to actually take some classes, preferably ones that would apply to either program until you make your decision.

Can i do my Masters degree (economic) and my LLB at the same time

Can i do my Masters degree (economic) and my LLB at the same time?
I have been troubled recently with the decision of whether or not I want to go to graduate school for an MA in economics or law school. I understand that LLB is more practical and has better job security and money, but i love economics and am happy doing it. Is there anyway i can do both simultaneously? I know it will be hard but it would be worth it. Also, input that would help my decision is always helpful and appreciated.

Follow what your heart yearns to do. Based on the construction of your question, i could only assume that you're IQ is above average or maybe even excellent. You could take both degrees simultaneously if your finances warrant. Anyway, i am sure that classes for masters in economics are held during weekends, whereas classes for LLB are during regular weekdays. Just know time management because both courses are really tough. I agree with your opinion about Law profession giving more security (encompassing) and of prestige, but if you were to follow your real interest, you could also go for your masters in economics. I'll let you into a little secret, i also did the same before hence i understand your predicament about prioritizing. I enrolled in my LLB and Masters in Public Administration simultaneously. i finished my masters with flying colors but had to give up my LLB due to financial constraints. I was a scholar in my masters. Going back to your query, IF FINANCES WARRANT. . . THEN GO FOR BOTH. Good luck!

What's more ideal in terms of job prospects upon graduation

What's more ideal in terms of job prospects upon graduation?
an MA in Economics or pursuing a law degree from a decent school, ie) Cardozo School of Law? Considering factors such as the excess supply of lawyers in this day and age, of course.
Higher Education (University +) - 3 Answers

Random Answers, Critics, Comments, Opinions :
1
I would recommend the MA in Econ unless money is not an issue. Benjamin Cordozo is a a solid law school but pricey (as all law schools seem to be). An economics degree is highly respected and I don't think you can go wrong with an MA in Econ, especially from a reputable institution. Good luck!

2
Both are great paths - I would choose based on what you want to be doing for the rest of your life, rather than job prospect. You never know how markets and circumstances will change over the years ahead. A law degree seems more practical (traditional school to job path - I'm sure a firm will hire you out of school). With M.A. in economics, you will need to carve your own plan a little more clearly - what kind of job exactly would you want to get after graduating? I would choose what you have the most passion for; the other details will work themselves out. ownpool - when I say that a firm would hire, I just meant that would be the easiest/quickest way to become employed out of school - by all means, having your own practice would be ideal as a lawyer, I would think (One could always work at a firm, then start own practice later)

3
I would only choose the masters in economics if it were from a top ten university. A Cardozo graduate can open his or her own office as soon as he or she passes the bar if he or she cannot find employment in a compatible firm. If a new attorney chooses a neighborhood business district where there are few or no lawyers, clients will soon be coming in the door. It is a matter of entrepreneurship and promotion of the legal services. Lawyers are independent professionals and can practice anywhere in a state where they are admitted to the bar. They do not need to work for a law firm.

economics degree?

seems like economics is more theory less practice. Or more policy and less application. A business these days can't afford to hire anyone unless they can begin working on a specific task immediately, with zero training and zero theory, and zero research. It's unfortunate actually. But companies can put an accountant to work immediately. All accountants do basically the same thing whether it's a mom n pop shop, or a fortune 500 company. Finance also affects the bottom line , if the person knows what he's doing. An economist knows all the underlying concepts as an accountant and finance major, but isn't quite trained in the intricacies of their craft. You'll probably have to work for a government body, an agency, or organization that sets policy of some kind or in academia.

2
Have you thought about working for a think tank? These are the types of institutions that hire economists, not actual businesses. I'm sure some of the large companies (and by large, I am thinking multinationals that have a desire to hedge against various risks, like Exxon Mobil, or Citibank) have their own economic groups that analyze the way changes impact their particular industry. Another option is Wall Street, if you can use your degree to predict the future, they should be willing to pay big bucks to have you work there. Another option would be financial engineering, or coming up with financial instruments that result in various pay offs depending on various conditions. Large companies use this to hedge their risk. The federal government, I'm sure, is also hiring economists. I know a lot of them work at the Federal Reserve and the Treasury department. The CIA and other intelligence agencies also use them in analyzing other countries' economic position, and possibly to track financial crimes. Economics is not usually as widely applicable to business as other degrees, usually you are pigeonholed into certain portions of the business. Small businesses usually do not hire them as well, since they can't afford to have someone who does not directly impact the bottom line. I looked at an advanced degree in Economics when I was leaving school, but decided against it due to the factors I mentioned above. I went and got an MBA, that should certainly be an option for you, since you should have most of the economics and finance classes, and the math should be a breeze for you. Good luck!

Depends on the program and university. Look up those programs on the university's website, and look for its requirements.

2
In general: 1) Complete an undergraduate degree. 2) Research schools that interest you. Remember to check their accreditation status. 3) Read all of the entrance requirements for programs that interest you. 4) For most schools, there will be an exam required such as the GRE or GMAT. You will need to take the appropriate test. 5) Fill out all application paperwork for the program at the school. Different schools and programs will have different requirements.

3
Go to the webpage, and look into the department. Does it have professors you want to study under? Go to the admissions section, and download (and order in the mail) the forms you need. Get in contact with the department professor who is in charge of your graduate program. Email is fine, but write it on a seperate paper, then paste it into email. You don't want a nonprofessional error filled email to be the first thing they remember you by. Contact with this person is very important. Send in your applications, plus GRE scores (or whatever test they require for that program), and schedule an interview. (you will already have been in contact with the program administrator through email, so you can continue the conversation here) Interview. Get your acceptance, or rejection letter.

I'll be graduating with a Honors BA in economics next year and I was thinking about what to do next. 2
Philosophy and Poli Sci are both foundation education degrees that you do at the Bachelors level to prepare to Law school (Law school is really the only thing Philosophy has going for it). It would be less wise to pursue either of them at the Masters level unless you intend to get a PhD and be a professor. You should probably do your best to find employment after you graduate. A crappy job market doesn't mean that jobs don't exist. If the job hunt doesn't work out, then consider going back to school for a Masters in Econ or whatever field you'd like to work in.

3
When all else fails Creativity prevails - take that from an Econ grad. You have to tools to create your own destiny and future. Move home, start something up. Get creative and start your own business/website/foundation/anything. Analyze the situation and find a solution, or seek your purpose in life and hit that hard. No matter what do not make any big financial commitments - these will hold you down and prevent you from taking your own time to create something for yourself and your future. Trust me you do not want to work 8 hours a day for some goofy rich man. It doesnt pay in the long run. Its a waste of youth and education as well. But on the other hand, yea there are many jobs, good ones too. You might have to move to a big city where more money is but you will find something if you really want to. The advice I got was - when the economy sucks stay in school. So in essence you have too many options to even handle. Goodluck fellow grad.

Before going for an MA, apply what you learned first. Only when you are practicing what you learned will you find out what you really want. Taking up an MA is a self-investment, and knowing what you know and what you don't know will determine which one to take without having any regrets in the future.

Well, a good starting point, for finding what you're looking for, might be this one: http://www.indiana.edu/~econed/ You can also consult the curriculum from various top universities around the world. For example: http://www.economics.harvard.edu/courses/ (It seems that there is a small mistake in your statement: if you have only four years of study, then you should have obtained only the B.A. degree in Economics. If this is true, then, you have to continue your preparation up to the M.A. level. Such courses are offered, in Budapest, by the "Central European University"-- whose URL is: http://www.ceu.hu/dep_economics.html)

Most companies aren't familiar with foreign degrees so it would be much easier if you come to Canada on a student visa and take some courses that require your degrees as prerequisite. Then the companies would be more interested. With an MA you could probably get a job but not one that is best for you. One of the best universities in Canada for accepting foreign students and for business studies is Concordia University in Montreal. Try asking their student advisors for advice.

I’d say â€Å“yes,” if you have a respectable number of history credits on your transcript and did well in them (mostly â€Å“A’s”) AND if you can get good positive references from History-based professors/instructors. If it’s not too late, try to get enough history electives credits to give yourself a â€Å“minor” or better yet, a second â€Å“major” in history---then you’ve got no problem (ex: I have a primary background in biology, but with a second major in religious studies, I got into graduate school for religious studies). Even if you cannot get enough to make a minor, one tip is to calculate a GPA for the history courses you did take and make reference to that in your application for grad school (assuming it is something strong like 3.5/4.0, etc.). Your only issue is going to be getting into a Master’s program—if you get that though, what you did a BA in exactly becomes irrelevant—Ph.D programs are only really going to be interested in how well you did as a Master’s student and what your graduate professors have to say about your potential…

Vanderbilt or Emory, which is the better school

Vanderbilt or Emory, which is the better school?
I am looking to go for a Masters in Economics with an emphasis in finance and banking from Vanderbilt. But I also have the option of attending Emory Law School. Which sounds like the better deal? A year and a half MA Economics program from Vanderbilt or three years and a 100,000 investment with Emory Law School?

Seems to me you need to decide if you are going to pursue economics or law as a career before you make this decision. Both schools have EXCELLENT reputations in these specialties. Consider your ROI as well. 18 mos. in finance/banking could result in a very high-paying position, as could three years in law school. Perhaps you could pursue finance & banking law as an option.

2
They are both great schools. Emory is the slightly better school. But since you are looking at different disciplines, it really shouldn't be the school that determines where you go. Do you want to be a lawyer or do you want to work in finance? If you really want to go into banking, I would recommend an MBA program over the MA program. The only advantage to the MA over an MBA is that you can do it without work experience.

MA econ new grad looking for a job in finance

MA econ new grad looking for a job in finance!?
I am a MA economics from a State U. I went in the MA program right after the undergrad. So I do not have any formal working experience besides a summer internship just done with the biggest auto insurance company. I have a good GPA and looking for a job in financial industry. I turned down 3 offerings as a financial advisor of the major insurance companies because I AM NOT a cold call person (my internship experience told me that). Many people said I am crazy. I totally know that I want to pursue a career in investment/risk/portfolio/foreign exchange analyst. However, I did not have any related offerings. I got turned down from 3 interviews already. I have tried monster/ Roberthalf/hotjobs/indeed/craigslist etc. Where can I find my dream job? Is there anyone can refer my resume? Could you suggest some headhunters please? I am eager to establish a career as a analyst!!

MA in economics question

MA in economics question?
Hello. i know i should be asking my councilor, but i want your take before i do so. anyway, I'm a 3. and a halfth year student graduating from the University of Toronto in a couple of months with a double major in history and political science and a minor in religious studies. With a CGPA of 3.4, I was wondering what my chances were of getting into an economics program for grad school, especially in the universities like NYU, McGill, UCLA or Chicago. I took economics in my first year, hated it and barely passed with a 55. However, after learning much politics I defintely had a change of mind. anyway, am I still eligible to apply despite my non mathematical background? if so, do i have to take extra courses (such as qualifying year ones). how long will these take? anything else i should know? a buddy of mines also suggested that i stay back a year or 2 two complete another major on economics, but i think thats a waste of time.

You are correct - it is a waste of time. Get a Masters instead. I believe you have an excellent chance of getting into a Masters economics program - but maybe not a prestigious one. But no great loss. Having conducted tons of job interviews I can assure you prestige is not all its cracked up to be. The reason is there is no way to compare degrees from prestigious schools to other schools. You may believe a degree from NYU is better than say a degree from a SUNY but how much better? Is is worth a grade point or what? Who can say. That being the case all schools with a reasonable reputation are treated the same. And remember your quals are only part of what determines who gets a job. It is also based on your application and job interview. The better applicants stand out regardless of where they studied. Thanks Bill

2
Nothing is going to hold you back from applying for a masters in economics. But a lot is going to hold you back from being accepted. If you want to pursue schools like Chicago,UCLA, and NYU, I'm positive your going to need a lot more math. I've heard that at Chicago, applicants without the necessary math background get tossed into the trash bin quicker than one can say "scarcity". If you barely passed intro economics, I sincerely hope you know what you're getting into when looking at some of those programs. Mathematics and Economics are becoming more synonymous as time goes by so if you're really serious about it, you have to be very good at math.

Would I be ok with a BA from Economics and an MA in Government from Yale

Would I be ok with a BA from Economics and an MA in Government from Yale?
I know its Yale but are the degrees (major) valuable? What could I do with these degrees?
Higher Education (University +) - 3 Answers

Yes, Yale is traditionally strong in these areas. However, your MA would be in "Political Science" because Yale does not have a "Government" department. (It's just a different term. Harvard has a "Government" department, but not a "Political Science" department.) With these degrees, you could do a fairly wide variety of things: 1. consulting or i-banking, of course 2. work for a political think tank 3. go into politics 4. teach high school, or get a Ph.D. and then teach college 5. go to law school 6. go to business school 7. be a reporter or newspaper writer 8. other things too...

2
An undergraduate degree from Yale is enough to make it in life...but an MA allows you to do pretty much whatever the heck you want. (Although Harvard's Kennedy School is better).

2
The top MBA programs want you to have four or five years of work experience. A degree from one of these schools will pay off much more than an MA in Economics. Any MBA program that will take you with no work experience or after two years probably isn't worth it. The advantage to an MA in economics is that you could do it right away. The unfortunate reality, though, is that all the really good graduate programs in economics don't take terminal master's students. That means you would have to settle for a mediocre MA program if you don't want a PhD. As an alternative, you could look at Masters in Financial Engineering courses -- or an MS in Mathematical Finance.

Should I study an MBA or MA in Economics

Should I study an MBA or MA in Economics?
Hello Yahoo Community, I am an undergraduate student at Miami University in the Farmer School of Business. I am currently majoring in Business Economics, which will allow me to graduate with a B.S. in Business, and my concentration would be Economics. My question to you is about what Masters degree I should pursue. I could do two things: Earn an MBA or Earn an MA in Economics Which would be better for me? I would like to work in the banking industry or some other private corporation. The possibility of working for the government is also open, but I would rather work in the private sector. What are the advantages/disadvantages to each? Thank you.

I assume that you are looking for a fulfilling career that pays well. If so you want to obtain a CPA and either work for, or start, a CPA firm or shoot for CFO in the corporate world. The first step is to check and see if you have the right kind of academic credits to sit for the CPA exam. If you do, apply with the national, regional, and local CPA firms. If you don't, sign up and then apply to the CPA firms. The reason for starting with a CPA firm is to get a good nuts and bolts level understanding of the audit process and to get an insight into the type of corporation you might wish to work for if you don't stay with the CPA firm. Hope this helps Jerry-the-bookkeeper

What are good jobs for people who love economics, but hate sales

What are good jobs for people who love economics, but hate sales?
Hello, I'm fascinated by Economics. I know ... NERD! Whatever, the more I find out, the more I want to know. Most people think Stock Broker or Financial Advisor when they think about Finance. I hate sales, though. I can do it, but I'm sure I could learn to eat with my feet if necessary as well, and it's toss up to which I would rather rely on for my living. So what jobs are there in finance for LOVERS of economics, HATERS of Sales Based Employment; and how do I get them? I already have a degree in Business, but not in Econ, Finance, or Accounting. I've considered going back to school for a combination of MBA/MA in Economics/JD Law Degree. Even if I get more schooling, I'll still need a day job at this point to finance it. So what can people recommend? Thank you in advance to everyone who can help me.

An obvious choice would be either Law School or go into business management. Or politics. But really, it's up to you. Ask yourself what you would like to do as a career. Do you like working with people, working with data, working with machines, analyzing things, etc and talk to your career office and/or academic advisor in your department and also professors who seem approachable for career advice. It might take some time to figure out what you want to do....maybe shadow somebody in the career you are interested in or work at a part-time internship to get some hands-on experience. Best of luck and don't worry if you don't completely know what you want to do...most people don't.

Try your university's library. They will almost certainly have both hard copies of related journals and electronic databases to help you find what you need. Most university libraries will also have at least one research librarian who can help point you in the right direction. If you still can't find what you are looking for, try this: go to google and click on "advanced search." Then, limit the domain to be searched to .edu -- That may turn up some papers and journal articles that have been written by academic scholars. But, check the resources of your school's library first! Carolyn Lawrence, AdmissionsAdvice.com

Which MSc/MA in Financial Economics is the best?
Hello! I'm an AB Management Economics senior in the Philippines, and I'm planning to take up an MSc/MA in Financial Economics. I found graduate schools in UK and in Europe that offer the said degree program, but I don't know which one to take. Kindly answer my question based on the ff criteria: a. prestige of school/degree program b. courses offered/required to take c. fees and the likelihood of getting financial aid d. likelihood of being hired after completing the program Thank you very much!

Hello. a, b, and c depend largely on the school which can be found through searches (you're doing great) c and d depend largely on you.

Hello - A number of years ago, a study of the employment-connection between the prestige of the undergraduate institution and/or the graduate institution, and the job market showed that at most the "name" school helps you get your first job. If you are returning to the Philippines, prestige is even more amorphous. I'd suggest graduate study in any major university in the UK or Spain, because of the language connections to your career. You need to contact the Philippine Dept of Education to determine what, if any, aid is available to you for study abroad. Keep in mind that a graduate degree also qualifies you to be a college/university instructor. British universities are well-known for welcoming foreign students. I received my LLM at University of Edinburgh [wonderful place, but remarkably cold]. I had been offered the same program at Exeter and I think i would have enjoyed myself more. Of course, if you can get into Oxford or Cambridge, by all means take it. And the London School of Economics may be just the place for you. Good luck

Probably not, but if you like economics, by all means get the MS in economics. The MBA degree was originally created because people were promoted to managerial positions, and often they did not know how to manage, although they were good engineers, or scientists, or factory workers. Companies needed managers who could understand what the workers were saying, and managers without the factory floor experience often did not understand the people they supervised. Business schools responded by creating the MBA degree. It is a general degree designed to train student to enter any area of management up to CEO. MBA programs accept students with any undergraduate degree. The MBA is in contrast to the MS degree which trains students to reach higher levels of knowledge in their specialty so that they can serve as better staff and researchers, with no intention of becoming high level managers. Before you decide on an MBA program explore the Internet for information on available programs. There is a lot of information available. Some sites are limited to specific countries, such as Germany, UK, or Australia. There is a comprehensive free public service with more than 2,000 MBA programs listed worldwide. The nice thing is that it allows you to find the program that best fits you. It allows you to search for programs by location (US, Europe, Far East, etc.), by concentration (finance, marketing, aviation management, health management, accounting, etc.), by type of program (full-time, distance learning, part-time, executive, and accelerated), and by listing your own criteria and preferences to get a list of universities that satisfy your needs. Schools report their accreditation status, tuition cost, number of students, class sizes, program length, and a lot of other data. Schools provide data on entrance requirements, program costs, program characteristics, joint degrees, and much more. You can use it to contact schools of your choice, examine their data, visit their web site, and send them pre applications. You can see lists of top 40 schools ranked by starting salaries of graduates, GMAT scores, and other criteria. some of the other sites are less comprehensive, but all are useful.

What are the top twenty stand alone MA/MS programs in Economics

What are the top twenty stand alone MA/MS programs in Economics?
I'm currently an undergrad at NYU studying Economics. I'll be graduating this fall'07 and have started to look into Master Programs in economics. Before answering please note: There are many great schools in Economics, but very few schools offer stand alone Masters Degrees in the field, which is what I am looking for. I may pursue a PhD one day, but for now I am not interested in such programs as after four long years of undergrad, I don't want another five or six right out of school, which a PhD would require. Not to mention that less than 30% of those who are admitted and start a PhD program actually finish. I'm just not up for it right now, maybe in ten years after I've gained some professional experience and return from the Peace Corps. (I'm interested in working with the Peace Corps in the field of Development Economics / English Teaching). I know NYU is a top 20 program which offers a stand alone MA degree in economics and GWU offers a relatively good one. Any other ideas? TY

You are correct that most schools here only have PhD programs. I think the London School of Economics has a masters in Econ. They may even have a one-year masters program. It's a good school to make connections at because a lot of politicians and business people like Robert Rubin have gone there. You're lucky to be going to NYU. If I had gone there, I'd be trying get internships and jobs on Wall St. Maybe you could work for an investment bank for a year after you graduate for the money to go to graduate school or travel. There was also a school in Spain that I looked up once that had a Masters in Economics and Finance. It's Universidad de Navarra and the program was in English and only cost 7,000 Euro. You might want to check out other schools in the UK. Make sure you take a lot of math and do well in it to prepare yourself for graduate school. A math minor or a few courses beyond calculus like linear algebra, differential eqns, stats, prob, real analysis etc...will help you a lot. You probably know that already. Look around at what the schools recommend for math and take more math.

It depends on the high school, whether it is public or private, and what state it is in. Different states have varied requirements for teaching licenses. Contact the Board of Education in the County or City where you'd like to teach. Most school systems require a specific number of college credit hours in education, specifically for the secondary grades. Some systems might hire an MA in Econ with the condition that those classes were underway and completed in a specified amount of time. There are a number of factors. Get the specifics from the Board of Ed.

I don't know if rules vary by state, but here in Georgia you can teach right away. Go to the county website and apply. My husband has a BS in Finance and he was able to teach high school level math & business courses , he just has a certain time period to get certified but when you are hired by the school they help you with that and even pay for it I think!Go for it! thats a great contribution to teach!

I wouldn't say it's a long shot. What's most important is that you have connections with your professors, do good research with them, attend conventions in your field of study, and really build up your network in academia. It really is about who you know and what you've done. Anybody can have a good GPA and GRE score but it's most important to show that you've prepared yourself as an undergrad and are ready to take the plunge into becoming a fine grad student also. Don't think that any grad program is impossible.

Degree Requirements Depending on the track chosen, students must complete 30 to 36 hours of approved graduate course work. Those credits include 12 credit hours of core courses. The required core courses are two in economic theory and two in econometrics. In addition, students take 18 to 24 credit hours of other required courses and electives, depending on their track. All courses must be taken for a letter grade (the pass/fail option is not permitted). No more than 3 credit hours of ECON-691 Internship may be taken. All courses must be approved by the advisor and fit into a coherent educational program developed by the student in consultation with the advisor.

The number of choices in the field of economics at respectable universities (with an on-campus presence as well as on-line programs) in the U.S. is quite limited. The tendency is for online programs to be more professional in nature, so there are plenty in engineering or business, and fewer in such traditional academic disciplines as economics. But there are distance programs overseas that offer degrees in economics. The best of these that I am aware of is the University of London. Their External Programme offers a variety of master's degrees in various fields of economics by distance learning. These include master's degrees in agricultural economics, financial economics, applied environmental economics, and banking. The also offer a postgraduate diploma in economic principles. These are distance programs, but the study format may differ from the typical online format popular int the U.S. http://www.londonexternal.ac.uk/course_search/subject_groups.php There are other programs offered by univeristies in Australia, Belgium, Germany, South Africa and the United Kingdom, but I do not know how good these are. See my source below. In some fields of study, it is necessary to wait for online learning to catch up to you, and eventually it does. Several years ago there were no ways to take graduate level math courses online at a U.S. university. Today the situation is different, and you can study for a graduate math degree online. The same may someday be true in economics.

Can I get into med school with an MA in Economics

Can I get into med school with an MA in Economics?
Can I get into med school with an MA in Economics? I started undergrad in engineering, then switched to economics. I'm getting ready to finish a masters program in economics, and I'm weighing my options after that. Would I have a realistic shot at getting into med school, given that background? I'm aware of the process (MCAT scores, biology/chemistry/physiology prereqs), and I know money is a huge factor, too. I don't have a strong background in any of the biological sciences, and my grades have fluctuated with my employment (I'm a starving student who has to work for a living) so my transcripts are less than stellar. Is becoming a surgeon just a pipe dream, or could it be attainable (if I got the MCAT scores and found a sugar mamma, of course)?

If your MA grades are good, then that might help take some focus off of your undergrad career, but you'll probably be shut out of top tier med schools without even getting consideration. This, of course, depends on how well you do on the MCAT. Do well enough on the MCAT, and you'll definitely get interviews *somewhere*. Studying economics will not hurt you--it'll help you, if anything. It's a little unfair that a couple of bad grades earned while you're still a teenager end up affecting your life a decade down the road, but unfortunately, that's life. Lots of people have to deal with that. I'm pretty sure most people pay for med school with a couple hundred thousand dollars in loans, so don't worry about the money (unless you somehow fail out, in which case you're screwed, but that's true for everyone).

Yeah you can. i've got a friend who read maths and philosophy for her first degree who is starting a grad entry medicine course. It's a very intense degree but if you're interested check out http://www.nottingham.ac.uk/shared/shared_careers/pdf/ideas-Graduate_Entry_into_Medicine.pdf

The acceptance rate at some of the better known med schools is about 1%. OK, so some of the lesser known schools have a much higher admit rate, but don't count your chickens before they hatch. You are going to be competing for a seat against kids who have been planning on entering med school since they were in Junior High. It doesn't matter that you majored in Econ. The med schools dont care about that. What they care is that you got A in organic chem, physics with calc, etc and then aced the MCATs. Majors don't count. Grades in key courses count. Also, it would be a great idea to have several hundred hours of volunteering in health care settings so they can be certain that you are totally dedicated to medicine as a profession, and having your name on a published research article or two wouldnt be bad either. You did that when you were a Freshman or Sophomore, right? You can apply to med school with a reasonable chance of getting admitted when you have checked off the same items on the list as the other kids.... When will that be?

How selective are MA Economics programs

How selective are MA Economics programs?
I have a Bachelor's in History with a minor in Business and a 3.9 GPA. I've been looking into universities for a Master's in Economics. From what I've read at a few particular schools, I need to take 3 more classes before I can apply for a program (Intermediate Micro, Intermediate Macro, Econ Statistics). Several of the universities I've been looking at don't require one to take the GRE, which I find weird, since I thought that was required for all grad programs. Does this mean the Economics MA is not very selective? Or is it just that not many people go for this particular program? Thanks.

Many of the big name schools are very selective and don't offer terminal masters degrees in economics. The secret to applying to traditional masters level programs in economics is not the GRE (which is given more weight for PhD programs); it is illustrating an affinity for and an ability to do mathematics. In general, the more mathematics, the better. If you are able to show that you can handle single and multi variable calculus, algebra and real analysis then you will have shown a potential admissions committee that you have the ability to handle the so-called rigor of equilibrium models co-opted from Physics that permeate neoclassical economics. In general, 'freshwater' schools will frame everything in terms of microeconomics so illustrating that you have done intermediate and advanced micro is helpful while 'saltwater' schools still care about macroeconomics --well, to a greater degree at least-- so both micro and macro are of value. There is an additional consideration to just an MA Economics especially considering your background in history and business. If you were hoping for more practicality or interesting subject matter from an economics program then don't be disheartened: consider programs that focus on policy and political economy; or the Oxbridge style MPhil in Philosophy, Economics and Political Science; or an MA in Applied Economics. Not all programs are cut from the same cloth and focus on the same subjects so pick those that suit your strengths and interests. Good luck.
