Hello all. I have rapid cycling bipolar disorder. I take tons of meds, dont want to get into that here

Hello all. I have rapid cycling bipolar disorder. I take tons of meds, dont want to get into that here:?
I have been in treatment since 13, repeated hospitalizations and meds for 14 yrs (steady since 2003). I still struggle with things, not as bad as it used to be though because I dont party anymore...I have a gf of 5 yrs, thats great, good friends, play sports and music, just finished an MA in economics, I have lots to be happy about! I guess that is the problem with the disorder, I read how so many patients flat out do not respond to treatment. I notice a strong seasonal aspect to the disorder, I really decline in the winter, probably due to lack of sunlight/Vitamin D... What a long intro, but kind of necessary: Question: For other bipolars, how many of you have a small/no response to treatment, and have you found any alternatives, other that diet exercise all that? I do that, play hockey, jog, love to exercise, its just depressions stops me sometimes. How can you be consistent with health when depression knocks you down all the time? I dont mind productive mania, but anger...NO!

Have you ever considered that your bipolar disorder may be a product of another disorder. Many children who suffer from ADHD as a kid continue into adulthood with Adult ADD. Obviously I don't have enough information and am not trying to make a diagnosis...and...maybe you and your doctor have already considered the alternatives. Here is an article from WebMD about the two disorders and how they are commonly mistaken in diagnosis. http://www.webmd.com/content/Article/99/105151.htm I hope you find a combination of medication and treatment to "get rid of the cloud hanging over your head" as I call it.

Bipolar disorder is a severely disabling medical condition. In fact, it is a leading cause of disability in the world, according to the World Health Organization. However, with appropriate treatment, many individuals with bipolar disorder can live full and satisfying lives. Persons with bipolar disorder are likely to have periods of normal or near normal functioning between episodes. Ultimately one's prognosis depends on many factors, which are, in fact, under the individual's control: the right medicines; the right dose of each; a very informed patient; a good working relationship with a competent medical doctor; a competent, supportive, and warm therapist; a supportive family or significant other; and a balanced lifestyle including a regulated stress level, regular exercise and regular sleep and wake times. There are obviously other factors that lead to a good prognosis, as well, such as being very aware of small changes in one's energy, mood, sleep and eating behaviors, as well as having a plan in conjunction with one's doctor for how to manage subtle changes that might indicate the beginning of a mood swing. Some people find that keeping a log of their moods can assist them in predicting changes. The goals of long-term optimal treatment are to help the individual achieve the highest level of functioning while avoiding relapse. Basically, its will power which is the essential to overcoming this disorder. I believe the life you are living, the state you are in now, is the best form of treatment. I think your life is much better than others who i've seen in your position and you should be proud of your accomplishment, don't deprive yourself of congrats which you obviously deserve. All the best in the future, my prayers are with you.

I think you need a routine and stick to it. Make a daily exercise plan for Monday to Saturday that is realistic. Nothing that will get you too fatigued or stressed out. And then just stick to it whether you are depressed or not. You will find going for walks, jogging, etc. and just getting out into the fresh air lifts your mood. You sound like you are doing very well, keep it up!

Totally un-hireable.. I feel toxic

Totally un-hireable.. I feel toxic..?
27 y/o w/ humanities BA and on verge of economics MA with work experience in admin & light weight database reporting. I cannot get a gosh darn job. I average about 2 phone screens & one face-to-face per month for the last year. Not even my temp agency can get me a job, other than short term minimum wage jobs stuffing envelopes. Not to mention that job boards are plagued with head hunters & not the companies themselves. The real problem is that I have an offer but they keep doing background and drug screens on me & keep pushing my start date back. Its my pee & I did the work!! I don't get it, but we are on the verge of round 3. My unemployment is gone & I'm basically gonna starve to death or I'll join the military and die overseas. My gf on the other hand is pushing forward in her career. She doesn't even respect me anymore. Its so funny how it turned from me supporting her/us, to her supporting me/us, to her wanting independence. Its only been a year & we have been together for nearly 6 years. I just feel so helpless and tiny. I was packing my things up(preparing 4 the worst) and I noted the price tag on shoe boxes n stuff. What I wouldn't give to have that money back. I actually went to the bank and they acknowledge I've had the account for 18 years, funny cause I have about 18 dollars. Its almost embarrassing to have nice things knowing that my bank account is empty. Thanks for reading. I ♥♥ the answers community!

Hey, I know the feeling but I don't have degree. I am enlisting in the Air Force. Look, you should consider it because the amount of people who are killed is small. You will only be killed if you go for a position in which you will see combat. (infantry or security forces) There are plenty of jobs that involve sitting behind a desk in the military. And guess what, if you tell your girl this maybe she will respect you. Then you can get married and if you do this the military will pay for you two to live either on base or off base. Also, you have a bachelor's degree so you wouldn't have to enlist, you could go in to train as an officer! Check out http://usmilitary.about.com/cs/joiningup/a/recruiter.htm and make sure you go with an open mind. You will not regret it if you can stand to lose a bit of freedom for the duration of basic training and part of job training school.

Question about Joint Degree Programs

Question about Joint Degree Programs?
When I graduate, I will have a BA in Political Science, which may not seem much, but it is a step closer to what I want to do with my life. I would like to go to law school, and also have a joint-degree, so I can have something to fall back on. I would like to practice corporate, health, environmental, or human rights law one day. Or get a job in Homeland Security But, I want to live on a reasonable salary (80k+), so I thought about getting another degree with my Juris Doctor. What will help me ring in the most money? I would like to go into Politics later, and become a mayor or state legislator. I would like to begin work in Homeland Security, Healthcare, Environment or Human Rights. A JD with.... MA in Political Science MA in Economics MA in Philosophy MA in Humanities MBA (Masters of Business Administration) MPP (Masters of Public Policy) MPA (Masters of Public Administration) MPH (Masters of Public Health) PhD (Philosophy, Political Science, Economics) MD (Doctor of Medicine) MEM (Master of Environmental Management) MRP (Master of Regional Planning) Master Of Arts In Arab Studies Master of Health Administration

Well, I know that your question is not about getting into law school, but I just wanted to give a small suggestion on that: don't major in political science. It's better to try something that will set you apart and help you attain a better-paying job ultimately, which will not be achieved by a political science degree. Philosophy is a VERY good area to get a Bachelors degree in, because philosophy does a good job at helping you learn thought processes, etc. My father's cousin is currently a university professor and she got an AWESOME score on her LSAT, which she credits to her philosophy background. There have also been studies which support this. Not to mention, it's VERY relevant to law and the study of it. If you plan on going into homeland security or maybe defense, some schools offer a BA in Criminal Justice with a concentration in military science or national defense. You will definitely want to have some internships and establish plenty of social networks - two VERY important things that will help you get some amazing jobs. A warning to you is this: law is a VERY demanding course of study and can be very rigorous. You may want to attain a Masters in your other field of study BEFORE attending school for your JD. Typically, a Masters (of course, with respect to the field) can be attained from anywhere around a few months or a year to two years - also contingent upon the hours required for the degree and the hours you take, etc. Try to get a degree in a field relative to the field you want to work in with your JD. Hope that makes sense:) Best of luck! :)

Hmmm . . . a JD/MBA is a popular, and maybe the most practical, combination for business and corporate law. It might also give you flexibility in moving from the law to the business side of things. I would maybe investigate the MPP and MPA programs, given your interests, though. I know Harvard has the Kennedy School of Government, if you have the opportunity to attend. Do investigate all degrees and schools thoroughly, and if you are in college now do ask your placement/alumni office to try to give you information and put you in touch with practitioners already out in the world to gain their advice. It's always good to see a question like this, where someone is interested in planning their future. Good luck!

2
the money is not dependent upon your degree. it sounds like you want to avoid litigation, although you will still find plenty of it in the fields of corporate, health or environmental nevertheless, I would suggest MPA, MPH or Master of Health Admin.

Well I will give you atta boys for having the vision to acquire more than one skill set in case the main one does not pan out down the road. I originally went into engineering but once out of school acquired the skills for real estate, construction/development, and finance. I now work in finance only. I would choose an MBA with the law degree. I would also master another avenue for income once out of school. You always want to have three streams of revenue if possible(two active) and one passive stream.

How do I get into a top 20 PHD program for Economics?
If I get a masters at a reputable state university school, and do very well, could I get into a top 20 program? I am using a MA as a stepping stone for a PHD because my undergraduate grades were not great. Any suggestions would be very appreciative! I am very motivated and want to know wat it will take in my position. Thanks!

Yes, getting good grades in a masters will help. However, the big factor will be your research performance as a masters student. You will want to impress professors (and most importantly, your advisor) with your motivation, curiosity, and problem selection skills so that they will write letters that say they thing you would make a top-notch PhD student. Ideally you should aim to get a publication, maybe present some posters and give short talks. You want to act as much like a PhD student as possible so that they will realize that you would make a good PhD student at their school.

What will matter more is your internships. One guy can have a B.S in Economics at Penn and another at Penn State, one may have gone through college without doing an internship during a summer, and the other may have done an internship with the Department of Commerce or Goldman Sachs. The internship will matter much more than which college you go to.

2
Really, every college and university in the US offers economics. As for the social side, that would mean you want a BA, not a BS in economics. My daughter got her BA in economics at Chatham University, a very nice school in Pittsburgh. www.chatham.edu) She starts her PhD this fall and is on her way to becoming a policy maker in the US government.

It is hard to find an undergraduate ranking for this field. The top graduate programs would of course be good for undergraduate rankings because they are prestigious schools. If you went to a tier II, III, or IV school you could possibly get a better education, but would have to get better grades to get into a top notch graduate program if you care about that. In all reality a middle of the road school can be better for undergraduates b/c they are focused on teaching instead of research. My friend at a relatively high ranked school is taught almost exclusively by people w/ masters degrees and assistants to the professors because the professors are more interested in their research. I've also heard that they are not too interested when they have to go instruct class for the same reason. My school is lower ranked, but I have never had an economics class taught by anything other than a Phd with extensive experience, including a Nobel Prize winner. I think all the states you listed are most likely going to be expensive to attend. Both tuition and living expenses could be high. You might qualify for grants though. For the social side of economics--of which there is such a thing despite the idiot's comment as economics is a SOCIAL SCIENCE--you can look for a place with developmental economics or poverty economics. These probably wouldn't really be available to undergrads though.

For economics you do not need to have an economics undergraduate degree. They will take just about any major.

2
You do not HAVE to have majored in a given field in order to apply for graduate study in it, but you should have taken enough courses to convince the admissions committee that you are prepared for advanced work. Fields that involve much quantitative work, such as Economics, would require that you have taken some pretty advanced undergraduate classes. For example, what courses in Econometrics have you taken? I took a sufficient number of courses in a couple of fields outside of my own major to have been a good candidate for an advanced degree in those fields had I wanted to pursue one, but I used up almost all of my undergraduate electives on them. There are some graduate programs for which you don't need to have majored in or even studied anything in particular. These include Law, Social Work, Business, Library Science, and Education.

Penn state without a doubt

2
I have never heard of Brandeis so Penn State must be better :D

3
Here are some statistics for you: Penn State ranked 42 worldwide (see first website below) Ranked highly (28) in Zimmerman's EDIRC list (second site) Penn State 37 in Coupe's citation ranking (third site) However, if you are in a position to choose between Penn State and Brandeis, make sure that you choose the institution that has a faculty member or two whose methods you find congenial, and who will be available for you to study closely with over the next decade. In other words, regardless of ranking, if you love a particular professor's method, respect her publications, and find her area of study to be a good match with yours, and regard two or three other professors in that department as superb potential mentors, then CHOOSE THAT PROGRAM. Be sure to find out whether that professor and those two or so others are tenured full or associate professors, and whether they are likely to leave while you are there. Also, before you choose, do make sure to visit and talk with current students. It may be that the program that is most highly ranked in terms of faculty research is also a lousy program in terms of teaching. Any respectable program will help you get in touch with current students so that you can ask these questions out of the faculty's earshot. Anyway, best wishes to you.

4
The only thing I'd add to Professor X is to review the process for your dissertation and the requirements. If you want to study Bayesian analysis and only one prof is there, but you have to endure a significant macro theory inundation, it may not be the best fit. I'm assuming your GRE scores are top-notch to be able to consider these two schools. For those of us who are at the minimal level, some of the choice has been made.

Economics career for the mathematically disinclined

Economics career for the mathematically disinclined?
I did my BA in Economics and got through that math fairly easily. I love the practical side of economics ... studying how general rules are applied by Amazon.com or even by entire governments. However, when I look at MA programs in Economics ... or try to read academic papers, it's clear that Economics is as mathematical as advanced physics. In essence, it's a science for mathematicians who find business a bit cooler than rockets. I understand there has been a century-long battle between literary economists (Galbraith) and "analytical" economists (Romer?) ... is there still room for the literary types? Does anyone know of an interesting sub-field of economics that doesn't involved years of mathematical study?

is economics a pseudoscience

is economics a pseudoscience?
I've been studying finance thruout my undergrad. study, and the first few core courses I have to pass are all economics related. I didn't know why. I then had been enrolled in a MA program in Economics, and graduated. I saw all the finance guys had to take Econ courses as well, I didn't know why by then either. Now I'm in a PhD program in Economics, things have been going wilder and crazier, the only thing that doesn't change is my feeling of this subject being a COMPLETE pseudoscience. The more you deal with it, the stronger the feeling becomes, ridiculous fundamentals of economics such as "rational hehaviors of consumers", "econometrics greatly rely on continuous quantities", "homothetic, quasi-concavity of utility, which incurs the whole demand theory , hence the fundamentals of Microeconomics"..... all of these bother me, since they conflict and severely contradict our simple realities, "winnowing out" is how economics theories were born, you try to simulate the real life into economics models, if your theory doesn't explain the reality, its abandoned, c'mon folks, real science doesn't do that.... In another hand, the fact that the united states and the rest of world have governments use this type of science to regulate all of us proves we are all PATHETIC BASTARDS.

Econ is a social science. It's basically about trying to find out how and why people be have they do with resources like money and capital and how to efficiently use them. If fairly difficult to quantify something like that. I mean there have been many schools of thought (Chicago, Keynesian, Austrian, et al) over the years to explain why people react the way the do some work better than others. It's not like physics where there is a unifying law that controls everything. You might have to do some research from their point of view and see why people like Keynes, or Friedman came up with their theories and their rationalities.

Well to teach math or economics at a university, you pretty much need a PhD (or to be working towards a PhD). At a community college, a masters degree will suffice (but the majority of these positions are part-time....and they pay about 1800 per course). In terms of the market, there is a much larger demand for teachers of mathematics at a community college than teachers of economics (though both are possible). In some states you can teach both subjects with a masters in one and a concentration of graduate courses in the other field. Something else to consider, it is easy to get into a masters program in economics without majoring in economics (take intermediate micro and macro/with an elective or two and some math). It is not so easy to get into an MA program in math without having been a math major (most decent departments will want you to have some exposure to abstract algebra and analysis).

2
Economics+maths, or mathematical economics, or quantitative economics. In my economics class, they are almost gay and weak in maths. That's why they don't understand both subjects. If you can do maths, you will be a gifted, talented economist.

I'm not sure why you would want to get an MS along with your MBA on the same subject matter, but perhaps multiple master's degrees are valued in Pakistan. I would suggest that unless there is extremely high unemployment in Pakistan at the moment, it is usually easiest to get a position in one's home country - most countries will give priority to their own citizens.

Is this your statement of purpose for wanting a degree in Economics? If so, I would simply state your reason for wanting to attend the respective school's program, and why you specifically want to pursue a degree in Economics w/them; perhaps it is a schools whose reputation is very highly respected and this is your field of work and you want to further your education in it. I hope this helps and good luck! :)

Personal fufillment, that is why I went to grad school. I never even used my degree, but knowing I have one gives me a great feeling of satisfaction

I can't tell you what to write. Only you know why you are going to grad school. Only you can say what getting an MA in economics is going to do for your future.

No, I don't have any suggestions.

The purpose of the statement of purpose / letter of intent is to convince the graduate admissions committee of each department to which you are applying that you are an excellent candidate for admission to THAT particular department. Here's what you should include: (And it does not matter in what order. Just make sure your narrative makes sense.) Your academic interests, and how your academic background suits you for further study of these interests. Be as specific as you possibly can, making SURE to show your familiarity with current theory and method in your intended area of study! Delineate your goals, too. (Do you intend to become a professor? a researcher? Do you want to work for an NGO or a nonprofit? Say so.) If there are blemishes on your record, explain them. For example, if you were working 30 hours a week as an undergrad, this might help the committee understand a less-than-perfect GPA. Be sure to include any information about you that cannot be found on your undergraduate transcripts (like awards, special projects you did, independent studies, work experience related to your field of study, etc.) Articulate your reasons for choosing THIS particular program. Show familiarity with the faculty and their fields of specialization. Don't just list the faculty - specify with whom you'd like to work and why. Mention your desire to be considered for teaching assistantships, research assistantships, or fellowships. But only briefly. Like once. You didn't ask about the writing sample, but I'll throw in some advice about that for free. :) The expectation in regard to your writing sample is that it will be an academic paper that you've written recently. Ideally, it will illustrate your ability to do solid research in your area of interest, employing your preferred methodology. Be sure to follow exactly the length requirements, as this differs at every program. And for goodness sake, proofread everything. Statements or writing samples with spelling or grammatical errors go directly to the bottom of the pile, so to speak. Best wishes to you!

what are my chances of getting an H1B visa

what are my chances of getting an H1B visa?
I am an undergradute student in a combined BA/MA economics program (expecting to graduate within 4 yrs) in the united states. After graduating i intend to get a masters in financial engineering from columbia university. I am an international student and hence getting an H1b visa is obviously important to me. I was wondering if wall street investment banks sponsor alot of foreign workers. I know the financial system is a mess right now and its stupid to expect a job right NOW. but i will graduate college in 2011 and grad skool in 2012. what are my chances of being sponsored by an investment bank working as an investment banking analyst or something of that sort.

If I could tell the future, I would be a rich man! In the past, Wall Street firms sponsored a lot of H1-B visas. However, while they have TARP money, it is unlikely that they will hire any such foreigners. So, it depends on how long you think the recession will last.

Not good - things will continue to decline in this country until we are third world. But surely someone as gifted as you in finance already knew that. It will be tough to invest in anything after the market crashes.

Slim to none. Besides there are certain requirements for H1-B visas and unless you are cap exempt you will be waiting a seriously long time. Find a U.S. Citizen and marry them that is the easiest/fastest way. Just make sure you have lots of pretty pictures and family to back it up.

Which graduate school would you decided on

Which graduate school would you decided on?
I am getting my BBA in Finance and Investments from Baruch College. I am debating on continuing at Baruch or going to Brooklyn College. I am interested in either the MBA Finance program at Baruch or the MA Economics program at Brooklyn. I want to become a Portfolio Analyst. So I think Economics is a smart graduate route. But I don't know if Brooklyn College has the same reputation that Baruch has. And plus its always good to have a backup just in case. Give a response if you are familiar with CUNY and the two schools I have mentioned. I cannot have any generalized answers and they do not really contribute to helping me reach a decision.

Either - education is just part of it; you have to sell yourself in the real world. MBA is preferred however, I know plenty of folks that were "given" their MBA degrees and haven't a clue on what Business Administration really is..

Baruch is a much better school for you, according to the information in your question.
