MA economics and actuarial field......?
I have 2 MA degrees in economics (from 2 different countries), and 3 yrs work exp in development economics research field (currently working in an international organization). With these degrees I am not taken seriously whn I apply for finance related jobs. I am thinking of broadening my possibilities. I have rigorous training in calculus, math and probability and stats, and feel I can pass some of the actuarial exams with some preparation. However, after passing these exams (esp 2/FM) , can I get jobs which are not actuarial but just finance based, say, finance analyst in companies? I am not sure if i want to make a career in actuary field. Should I just take some finance courses? If so, how can I highlight that in my resume when I apply for finance related jobs? Thanks!

What school best offers an MA in Economics
What school best offers an MA in Economics?
I am a graduating student of AB Economics in Saint Louis University in Northern Philippines and I want to further my studies in the same discipline. As much as possible I would like to study abroad so that I could take a grasp of better and newer approaches in economics (i.e. Post-Autistic Economics) which I have not encountered from any academic forum and discussion in the Philippines yet. It's like, we're still much focused on the neo-liberal approach here. I think it's not what Third World economies like the Philippines needs to progress. So if you could possibly give me some helpful information, I'd appreciate it.

Well i'm slightly confused about your question but i wuld reccomend the European business School in London whichis part of Regent's college and is the biggest business school in the u.k. the course is specific in international business where 100% of its students get work placements after 6 months of graduating. Sorry if i have been of no significant help.

You might want to get a copy of U. S. News & World Report's annual special issue on America's Best Graduate Schools. Or visit them at http://www.usnews.com/education . An MA in Economics is basically a stepping stone to a PhD in Economics. Just like an MBA it allows for greater job than any bachelor's degree. A MBA has a broader curriculum in a business sense while a MA you have to do actual qualitative analysis and modeling. An MA doesn't teach marketing, organizational behavior, operations, leadership or other general business classes you might find in traditional M.B.A. programs An MA in Econ teaches you skills that help to explain the complexities of how people and society operate. Economics isn't a business degree, although economics teaches important business skills. The MBA isn̢۪t about rote learning, it is more about decision-making and analysis in an environment where you can share your ideas and your experiences with other people who have a similar level of work and management background to you. It's all up to you and what you want to do in your career.
3
That and a few bucks will get you a cab ride.
4
Go into business for yourself, it's much more rewarding if you eventually become successful at it.

You can get a good job with the government, banks, and companies, or get a phd and do research or really whatever you want. Economics is really a good major, and I think even better than an MBA (unless you really want to work at target or walmart) My uncle got a MA in economics and a MA in public policy and he went to work for the state department and worked his way up and became an ambassador to belarus. Then he worked for nato, for a while in brussels, and now he's the deputy ambassador in iraq. It's pretty cool stuff, they fly him all over the country and provide housing and stuff for him, and he's met the president and stuff, even if you don't like him that's kind of cool. Anyways his name is dan speckhard if you want to google him. Myself I'm getting a PHD in economics and then I plan to do research on poverty and international development, but really the sky is the limit with any degree in economics.

There is plenty you can do with an MA in economics. An MA sets you apart and is more scarce than a MBA. An MA should give excellent quantitative skills that are very much in demand. Your MA should also have at least one concentration. This could be anything from labor economics to utility regulation. This is also where you will blow by the MBA grad if you chose the right subfield. You also should be able to find ample opportunities in government, research, or community college teaching.

I'd say an MBA- those are the dual degrees I'm going for, if not even a third like a MPP (MA of Public Policy). Even if you don't want to own your own business, I feel that an MBA demonstrates a thorough understanding of Economics. Berkeley's Haas Business School offers an interesting ten-month long MA degree called an "MFE, MA in Financial Engineering." If you want to go into the investment world, and are decent at math, I'd suggest the MFE.
3
Not sure why you'd get an MA in Econ and stop there. That just makes is seem like you're not smart enough to get a PhD. But anyway, an MBA is one of the few master's degrees that actually means anything in terms of getting a job, since it's a useful and a "terminal" degree.

Why get a degree from college when you don't even know what they are for? That just sounds like a waste.
2
If you don't know that, I'm surprised you went to a Top 20 school! Economist, financial analyst, etc.
3
Your degrees are not super technical so your career options are broad. Things that come to mind.... Economist, some type of banking (commercial, investment, commodities), sales, financial analysis, teacher, small business owner, management consulting, etc. The better colleges have really strong alumni networks. Be sure to check out your career development office and find alumni who are in fields that are of interest to you. They might be willing to talk to you and perhaps send you down the right path for your career. Good Luck.
4
Look on the Bureau of Labor and statistics website: http://www.bls.gov/oco/ocoidf.htm#E you can search by subject. I recommend an MBA if your looking to go to into the private sector though
5
i wld try for a job in finance, research, consulting. you could do public finance, work for a bank or the federal reserve. you could work a think tank for policy research. do you have any internship experience? that will be very helpful. you can try teaching at almost any level even college as a lecturer.
6
You have lots of options. You could work for the World Bank. You could work on international trade agreements. You could support a business with global development or global commerce. But, you could also do something that's only tangentially related to your degrees - a role as a government Legislative Director or working for an international aid organization.

You should apply in banking sector.
2
Yes. If you go into the financial sector, pursue financial econometrics and the economics of financial markets. You'll need good stats and calculus knowledge, but it isn't too bad (love Mathematica, SPSS and Excel!) I would think that the NGO, Gov't (Public Policy) would require more policy analysis and macro/micro theory and application. I went the financial route myself.

Coaching may not be necessary. I presume that you have done BA (Economics) already. You can take help of friends occasionally. But your self study should be intensive. As for optional papers best is to take Econometric Methods and Acturial Economics, if you are strong in Statistics and Mathematics. If not, best is to choose Financial Institutions and Markets and Electronic Governance. These may not be very easy but interesting for a person doing selfstudy. Good luck.

I would say statistics classes and make sure you know your basic calculus. At ASU I know for an undergrad in Economics, you are required to take statistics, brief calculus, and math for business analysis. I took Calc 1 and 2 instead, so MAT 270 and 271, but they differ at other colleges. For master's programs if your college does require you to take any more math, it will be during the program, but for entering you should be fine with the classes I listed above.

London School of Economics is definitely the best for Economics education in the UK. In the US, you could look at Boston University. Overall, your score counts a lot as entry to these universities is not easy. If you're from India, you could also look at Singapore as the cost of living is lower and the quality of education is comparable to the west.
