Which major is better, Economics or Math

Which major is better, Economics or Math?
I want a major in either Economics or Mathematics. After my BA I plan to get an MA in teaching either Economics or Mathematics. Which is a better option to major in? Oh, and also is it possible to find a job as an Economics teacher in College if I have an MA?

Well to teach math or economics at a university, you pretty much need a PhD (or to be working towards a PhD). At a community college, a masters degree will suffice (but the majority of these positions are part-time....and they pay about 1800 per course). In terms of the market, there is a much larger demand for teachers of mathematics at a community college than teachers of economics (though both are possible). In some states you can teach both subjects with a masters in one and a concentration of graduate courses in the other field. Something else to consider, it is easy to get into a masters program in economics without majoring in economics (take intermediate micro and macro/with an elective or two and some math). It is not so easy to get into an MA program in math without having been a math major (most decent departments will want you to have some exposure to abstract algebra and analysis).

Economics+maths, or mathematical economics, or quantitative economics. In my economics class, they are almost gay and weak in maths. That's why they don't understand both subjects. If you can do maths, you will be a gifted, talented economist.

I'm not sure why you would want to get an MS along with your MBA on the same subject matter, but perhaps multiple master's degrees are valued in Pakistan. I would suggest that unless there is extremely high unemployment in Pakistan at the moment, it is usually easiest to get a position in one's home country - most countries will give priority to their own citizens.

Is this your statement of purpose for wanting a degree in Economics? If so, I would simply state your reason for wanting to attend the respective school's program, and why you specifically want to pursue a degree in Economics w/them; perhaps it is a schools whose reputation is very highly respected and this is your field of work and you want to further your education in it. I hope this helps and good luck! :)

Personal fufillment, that is why I went to grad school. I never even used my degree, but knowing I have one gives me a great feeling of satisfaction

I can't tell you what to write. Only you know why you are going to grad school. Only you can say what getting an MA in economics is going to do for your future.

4
No, I don't have any suggestions.

The purpose of the statement of purpose / letter of intent is to convince the graduate admissions committee of each department to which you are applying that you are an excellent candidate for admission to THAT particular department. Here's what you should include: (And it does not matter in what order. Just make sure your narrative makes sense.) Your academic interests, and how your academic background suits you for further study of these interests. Be as specific as you possibly can, making SURE to show your familiarity with current theory and method in your intended area of study! Delineate your goals, too. (Do you intend to become a professor? a researcher? Do you want to work for an NGO or a nonprofit? Say so.) If there are blemishes on your record, explain them. For example, if you were working 30 hours a week as an undergrad, this might help the committee understand a less-than-perfect GPA. Be sure to include any information about you that cannot be found on your undergraduate transcripts (like awards, special projects you did, independent studies, work experience related to your field of study, etc.) Articulate your reasons for choosing THIS particular program. Show familiarity with the faculty and their fields of specialization. Don't just list the faculty - specify with whom you'd like to work and why. Mention your desire to be considered for teaching assistantships, research assistantships, or fellowships. But only briefly. Like once. You didn't ask about the writing sample, but I'll throw in some advice about that for free. :) The expectation in regard to your writing sample is that it will be an academic paper that you've written recently. Ideally, it will illustrate your ability to do solid research in your area of interest, employing your preferred methodology. Be sure to follow exactly the length requirements, as this differs at every program. And for goodness sake, proofread everything. Statements or writing samples with spelling or grammatical errors go directly to the bottom of the pile, so to speak. Best wishes to you!

what are my chances of getting an H1B visa

what are my chances of getting an H1B visa?
I am an undergradute student in a combined BA/MA economics program (expecting to graduate within 4 yrs) in the united states. After graduating i intend to get a masters in financial engineering from columbia university. I am an international student and hence getting an H1b visa is obviously important to me. I was wondering if wall street investment banks sponsor alot of foreign workers. I know the financial system is a mess right now and its stupid to expect a job right NOW. but i will graduate college in 2011 and grad skool in 2012. what are my chances of being sponsored by an investment bank working as an investment banking analyst or something of that sort.

If I could tell the future, I would be a rich man! In the past, Wall Street firms sponsored a lot of H1-B visas. However, while they have TARP money, it is unlikely that they will hire any such foreigners. So, it depends on how long you think the recession will last.

Not good - things will continue to decline in this country until we are third world. But surely someone as gifted as you in finance already knew that. It will be tough to invest in anything after the market crashes.

3
Slim to none. Besides there are certain requirements for H1-B visas and unless you are cap exempt you will be waiting a seriously long time. Find a U.S. Citizen and marry them that is the easiest/fastest way. Just make sure you have lots of pretty pictures and family to back it up.

Which graduate school would you decided on

Which graduate school would you decided on?
I am getting my BBA in Finance and Investments from Baruch College. I am debating on continuing at Baruch or going to Brooklyn College. I am interested in either the MBA Finance program at Baruch or the MA Economics program at Brooklyn. I want to become a Portfolio Analyst. So I think Economics is a smart graduate route. But I don't know if Brooklyn College has the same reputation that Baruch has. And plus its always good to have a backup just in case. Give a response if you are familiar with CUNY and the two schools I have mentioned. I cannot have any generalized answers and they do not really contribute to helping me reach a decision.

Either - education is just part of it; you have to sell yourself in the real world. MBA is preferred however, I know plenty of folks that were "given" their MBA degrees and haven't a clue on what Business Administration really is..

Baruch is a much better school for you, according to the information in your question.
