I have a MA in Economics, not worked for 12 years, how can I switch to Accounting and get a job ?

By accounting, do you mean bookkeeping? Take a class at a community college. Sign up at temp agencies.

I assume that you are looking for a fulfilling career that pays well. If so you want to obtain a CPA and either work for, or start, a CPA firm or shoot for CFO in the corporate world. The first step is to check and see if you have the right kind of academic credits to sit for the CPA exam. If you do, apply with the national, regional, and local CPA firms. If you don't, sign up and then apply to the CPA firms. The reason for starting with a CPA firm is to get a good nuts and bolts level understanding of the audit process and to get an insight into the type of corporation you might wish to work for if you don't stay with the CPA firm.
