MA in Econ or MBA

MA in Econ or MBA?
I need some help here. I have my BA in Economics. I am going to go back to school for my masters degree but am unsure of which to get. I was pretty much sold on an MBA with an emphasis on finance. As the time came closer to start the program, I got worried I was making a mistake. I cancelled classes. I think I might want an MA in Economics. Here's my issue: an MBA seems to be much more versatile. I won't get myself pigeon-holed into one career path that may not work out for me. I see unlimited possibilities with an MBA. Then there's the MA in Econ. My passion is economics. I love it and want to work for the federal govt or the Fed someday. I'm afraid it will be difficult to find a good job after completing that degree. After all, how many economists do you know? Please give me any insight you have as far as the reality of the MBA vs MA in Econ.

I have a BA in Finance, an MBA in Management, and a PhD in Organizational Behavior. You are absolutely correct in your supposition that the MBA is more flexible. I am not sure what school you are looking at but would it be possible to get the MBA with a concentration in Economics? Or even take Economics as all of your electives? On the other hand if you are truly passionate about Economics you may want to go that route. Have you looked for Economics jobs in the government sector? What are the minimum requirements as far as education and experience? It may be that any masters level degree will suffice or there could be requirements for specific degrees. Good luck with our education. The most important thing to do is to actually take some classes, preferably ones that would apply to either program until you make your decision.

Can i do my Masters degree (economic) and my LLB at the same time

Can i do my Masters degree (economic) and my LLB at the same time?
I have been troubled recently with the decision of whether or not I want to go to graduate school for an MA in economics or law school. I understand that LLB is more practical and has better job security and money, but i love economics and am happy doing it. Is there anyway i can do both simultaneously? I know it will be hard but it would be worth it. Also, input that would help my decision is always helpful and appreciated.

Follow what your heart yearns to do. Based on the construction of your question, i could only assume that you're IQ is above average or maybe even excellent. You could take both degrees simultaneously if your finances warrant. Anyway, i am sure that classes for masters in economics are held during weekends, whereas classes for LLB are during regular weekdays. Just know time management because both courses are really tough. I agree with your opinion about Law profession giving more security (encompassing) and of prestige, but if you were to follow your real interest, you could also go for your masters in economics. I'll let you into a little secret, i also did the same before hence i understand your predicament about prioritizing. I enrolled in my LLB and Masters in Public Administration simultaneously. i finished my masters with flying colors but had to give up my LLB due to financial constraints. I was a scholar in my masters. Going back to your query, IF FINANCES WARRANT. . . THEN GO FOR BOTH. Good luck!

What's more ideal in terms of job prospects upon graduation

What's more ideal in terms of job prospects upon graduation?
an MA in Economics or pursuing a law degree from a decent school, ie) Cardozo School of Law? Considering factors such as the excess supply of lawyers in this day and age, of course.

I would recommend the MA in Econ unless money is not an issue. Benjamin Cordozo is a a solid law school but pricey (as all law schools seem to be). An economics degree is highly respected and I don't think you can go wrong with an MA in Econ, especially from a reputable institution. Good luck!

Both are great paths - I would choose based on what you want to be doing for the rest of your life, rather than job prospect. You never know how markets and circumstances will change over the years ahead. A law degree seems more practical (traditional school to job path - I'm sure a firm will hire you out of school). With M.A. in economics, you will need to carve your own plan a little more clearly - what kind of job exactly would you want to get after graduating? I would choose what you have the most passion for; the other details will work themselves out. ownpool - when I say that a firm would hire, I just meant that would be the easiest/quickest way to become employed out of school - by all means, having your own practice would be ideal as a lawyer, I would think (One could always work at a firm, then start own practice later)

I would only choose the masters in economics if it were from a top ten university. A Cardozo graduate can open his or her own office as soon as he or she passes the bar if he or she cannot find employment in a compatible firm. If a new attorney chooses a neighborhood business district where there are few or no lawyers, clients will soon be coming in the door. It is a matter of entrepreneurship and promotion of the legal services. Lawyers are independent professionals and can practice anywhere in a state where they are admitted to the bar. They do not need to work for a law firm.

You have a lot of experience and well educated. You should go to be a part-time consultant. Sitting around and do nothing is very boring. As a consultant, you can help others as well as making new friends.
