What are the top twenty stand alone MA/MS programs in Economics

What are the top twenty stand alone MA/MS programs in Economics?
I'm currently an undergrad at NYU studying Economics. I'll be graduating this fall'07 and have started to look into Master Programs in economics. Before answering please note: There are many great schools in Economics, but very few schools offer stand alone Masters Degrees in the field, which is what I am looking for. I may pursue a PhD one day, but for now I am not interested in such programs as after four long years of undergrad, I don't want another five or six right out of school, which a PhD would require. Not to mention that less than 30% of those who are admitted and start a PhD program actually finish. I'm just not up for it right now, maybe in ten years after I've gained some professional experience and return from the Peace Corps. (I'm interested in working with the Peace Corps in the field of Development Economics / English Teaching). I know NYU is a top 20 program which offers a stand alone MA degree in economics and GWU offers a relatively good one. Any other ideas? TY

You are correct that most schools here only have PhD programs. I think the London School of Economics has a masters in Econ. They may even have a one-year masters program. It's a good school to make connections at because a lot of politicians and business people like Robert Rubin have gone there. You're lucky to be going to NYU. If I had gone there, I'd be trying get internships and jobs on Wall St. Maybe you could work for an investment bank for a year after you graduate for the money to go to graduate school or travel. There was also a school in Spain that I looked up once that had a Masters in Economics and Finance. It's Universidad de Navarra and the program was in English and only cost 7,000 Euro. You might want to check out other schools in the UK. Make sure you take a lot of math and do well in it to prepare yourself for graduate school. A math minor or a few courses beyond calculus like linear algebra, differential eqns, stats, prob, real analysis etc...will help you a lot. You probably know that already. Look around at what the schools recommend for math and take more math.

It depends on the high school, whether it is public or private, and what state it is in. Different states have varied requirements for teaching licenses. Contact the Board of Education in the County or City where you'd like to teach. Most school systems require a specific number of college credit hours in education, specifically for the secondary grades. Some systems might hire an MA in Econ with the condition that those classes were underway and completed in a specified amount of time. There are a number of factors. Get the specifics from the Board of Ed.

I don't know if rules vary by state, but here in Georgia you can teach right away. Go to the county website and apply. My husband has a BS in Finance and he was able to teach high school level math & business courses , he just has a certain time period to get certified but when you are hired by the school they help you with that and even pay for it I think!Go for it! thats a great contribution to teach!

what are my chances of getting into a top tier graduate economics program MA or PhD

what are my chances of getting into a top tier graduate economics program MA or PhD?
i go to the University of Cincinnati which has little to no reputation in econ research. if i average a 3.8 in my econ courses and get at least a 700 quantitative gre can that make up for the less rigorous course load. i realize me getting into a school like University of Chicago is a long shot, but it cant hurt. maybe you can suggest some schools to which i should apply.

I wouldn't say it's a long shot. What's most important is that you have connections with your professors, do good research with them, attend conventions in your field of study, and really build up your network in academia. It really is about who you know and what you've done. Anybody can have a good GPA and GRE score but it's most important to show that you've prepared yourself as an undergrad and are ready to take the plunge into becoming a fine grad student also. Don't think that any grad program is impossible.

Degree Requirements Depending on the track chosen, students must complete 30 to 36 hours of approved graduate course work. Those credits include 12 credit hours of core courses. The required core courses are two in economic theory and two in econometrics. In addition, students take 18 to 24 credit hours of other required courses and electives, depending on their track. All courses must be taken for a letter grade (the pass/fail option is not permitted). No more than 3 credit hours of ECON-691 Internship may be taken. All courses must be approved by the advisor and fit into a coherent educational program developed by the student in consultation with the advisor.
