economics degree

economics degree?
I am about to have an MA in economics. I find most jobs are looking for finance and accounting, but I always hear people rave about how great an economics degree is. I have had 0 luck finding a job with one. Anybody else experience this?

seems like economics is more theory less practice. Or more policy and less application. A business these days can't afford to hire anyone unless they can begin working on a specific task immediately, with zero training and zero theory, and zero research. It's unfortunate actually. But companies can put an accountant to work immediately. All accountants do basically the same thing whether it's a mom n pop shop, or a fortune 500 company. Finance also affects the bottom line , if the person knows what he's doing. An economist knows all the underlying concepts as an accountant and finance major, but isn't quite trained in the intricacies of their craft. You'll probably have to work for a government body, an agency, or organization that sets policy of some kind or in academia.

Have you thought about working for a think tank? These are the types of institutions that hire economists, not actual businesses. I'm sure some of the large companies (and by large, I am thinking multinationals that have a desire to hedge against various risks, like Exxon Mobil, or Citibank) have their own economic groups that analyze the way changes impact their particular industry. Another option is Wall Street, if you can use your degree to predict the future, they should be willing to pay big bucks to have you work there. Another option would be financial engineering, or coming up with financial instruments that result in various pay offs depending on various conditions. Large companies use this to hedge their risk. The federal government, I'm sure, is also hiring economists. I know a lot of them work at the Federal Reserve and the Treasury department. The CIA and other intelligence agencies also use them in analyzing other countries' economic position, and possibly to track financial crimes. Economics is not usually as widely applicable to business as other degrees, usually you are pigeonholed into certain portions of the business. Small businesses usually do not hire them as well, since they can't afford to have someone who does not directly impact the bottom line. I looked at an advanced degree in Economics when I was leaving school, but decided against it due to the factors I mentioned above. I went and got an MBA, that should certainly be an option for you, since you should have most of the economics and finance classes, and the math should be a breeze for you. Good luck!

Depends on the program and university. Look up those programs on the university's website, and look for its requirements.

2
In general: 1) Complete an undergraduate degree. 2) Research schools that interest you. Remember to check their accreditation status. 3) Read all of the entrance requirements for programs that interest you. 4) For most schools, there will be an exam required such as the GRE or GMAT. You will need to take the appropriate test. 5) Fill out all application paperwork for the program at the school. Different schools and programs will have different requirements.

3
Go to the webpage, and look into the department. Does it have professors you want to study under? Go to the admissions section, and download (and order in the mail) the forms you need. Get in contact with the department professor who is in charge of your graduate program. Email is fine, but write it on a seperate paper, then paste it into email. You don't want a nonprofessional error filled email to be the first thing they remember you by. Contact with this person is very important. Send in your applications, plus GRE scores (or whatever test they require for that program), and schedule an interview. (you will already have been in contact with the program administrator through email, so you can continue the conversation here) Interview. Get your acceptance, or rejection letter.

The median expected salary for a typical Economist (Corporate) in the United States is $106,886. However, I have heard of senior economists in IB or commercial lending earning upwards of $300k in NY or Boston.

The Effects of Economic Sanctions. I have always wondered how international economic sanctions directed toward a particular nation actually affect their GDP. What are the short and long term effects? How effective are the sanctions and how effective are they when there are non-participatory nations still trading with the targeted nation? Good luck.

What would you do after getting a bachelor's degree considering the economic conditions

What would you do after getting a bachelor's degree considering the economic conditions?
I'll be graduating with a Honors BA in economics next year and I was thinking about what to do next. Law school is an option however, if my GPA doesn't improve to a reasonable number that would be accepted by good schools then I would think there is no point financially in attending law school. Should I further my economics education and obtain a MA in Economics? What about other fields like philosophy, political science?

Get a minor in computer science so you can go get a job...

Philosophy and Poli Sci are both foundation education degrees that you do at the Bachelors level to prepare to Law school (Law school is really the only thing Philosophy has going for it). It would be less wise to pursue either of them at the Masters level unless you intend to get a PhD and be a professor. You should probably do your best to find employment after you graduate. A crappy job market doesn't mean that jobs don't exist. If the job hunt doesn't work out, then consider going back to school for a Masters in Econ or whatever field you'd like to work in.

When all else fails Creativity prevails - take that from an Econ grad. You have to tools to create your own destiny and future. Move home, start something up. Get creative and start your own business/website/foundation/anything. Analyze the situation and find a solution, or seek your purpose in life and hit that hard. No matter what do not make any big financial commitments - these will hold you down and prevent you from taking your own time to create something for yourself and your future. Trust me you do not want to work 8 hours a day for some goofy rich man. It doesnt pay in the long run. Its a waste of youth and education as well. But on the other hand, yea there are many jobs, good ones too. You might have to move to a big city where more money is but you will find something if you really want to. The advice I got was - when the economy sucks stay in school. So in essence you have too many options to even handle. Goodluck fellow grad.
